MakemediaThe world’s leading construction training simulator
The ACT-UK project is an award winning 3D simulation of various building sites that is used to train site managers. We designed both the scoring system and the simulation which is projected onto a 3x12 metre screen for a fully immersive experience.
Simulation training is proven to improve quality and safety as well as providing significant cost savings. This was a unique project and, in order to deliver success, the right software, hardware and expertise were needed. We are now exporting a similar project to Australia.
National and international recognition
As an industry leading innovation, the ACT-UK simulation centre was featured on the BBC’s Click technology programme. The piece focussed on the safety, cost and quality benefits that simulation training brings to construction and house building companies.

Unique challenges
Against a challenging economic backdrop it has become increasingly vital for house builders and construction companies to design, manufacture, build and sell their projects much more efficiently.
This requires fundamental changes to the processes of construction companies. In addition, there is a huge challenge in changing the mindset of key individuals and teams throughout the industry.
“The challenge for us as suppliers was to use our knowledge of bespoke real-time VR environments and web based software development to achieve the project goals”
With all this in mind there exists a clear need for a facility that can provide innovative training and personnel development. The provision of training also has a broad requirement to cover production processes, management skills, team building and many other areas.
It was these needs that the ACT-UK centre was designed to meet. The challenge for us as suppliers was to use our knowledge of bespoke real-time VR environments and web based software development to achieve these varied goals.
Innovative solutions
Simulation training has been proven to bring many benefits such as improved quality, less rework, a dramatic reduction in avoidable incidents and ultimately major cost savings. We therefore married our knowledge of VR systems to the centres established live interaction based approach.
Following two real life developments throughout their lifecycle we recreated both projects at five points in time. Each ‘time-slice’ is used as a visual aid to the training scenarios that are used in the centre. Ensuring realism and accuracy was vital and over 50,000 reference images were used, as well as architects drawings and other reference materials.
Award winning Innovation
Makemedia were 2009 Presagis Award winners.Best Visualization Application:
Presagis Awards
Our vision for a centre of training, innovation and excellence was matched by Makemedia’s desire to develop 3D and software content, which exceeded our expectations of what could be achieved. As a result, we are now a true partnership, rather than client and supplier.

Scoring and assessment system
The philosophy of ACT-UK training is not pass or fail, right or wrong; instead it is focussed on self awareness and strengthening the skills that make you more effective.
The system we developed reflects this, allowing many thousands of scenarios to be inputted, monitored and assessed. The output gives the trainee a unique insight into the way they work and gives the framework to develop.
