UX Camp Brighton 2011

Earlier this month, Laura (Makemedia’s marketing manager) and myself attended Brighton’s first BarCamp dedicated to user experience design. UX Camp Brighton (co-organised by our own Patrick Sansom) saw a diverse gathering of designers, IA specialists, project managers and beyond meet to share knowledge through a series of short presentations, debates, and workshops.

Everyone who attends a Barcamp is (usually) also a presenter, selecting a free time slot from the grid then attending other talks outside of their alloted place on the schedule. Barcamp’s are friendly and inclusive, and discussion is encouraged.

Some of the interesting debates of the day included the value of UX as a job role, and how conference-going experiences could be improved by discussing the good and bad from our own anecdotes. Workshops included techniques on sketching a client’s domain for better understanding, and applying metrics around subjective design work using emotional response testing.

It was a truly enlightening day, with a refreshingly diverse and friendly crowd which contributed to a great atmosphere for knowledge-sharing. For a more detailed rundown of the day, check out my retrospective of the event.

Makemedia Geek-Off: WordPress vs. Orchard vs. Umbraco

Makemedia Geek Off Session

Makemedia Geek Off Session

In case you were wondering what we like to get up to at lunchtime, here is a photo from out Makemedia Geek Off lunchtime debate earlier today. In this session we were discussing the pros and cons of particular platforms.

WordPress vs. Umbraco vs. Orchard

I’d be really interested to hear your thoughts so please feel free to comment below on which you think is best!

Makemedia have moved!

Makemedia have moved to shiny new offices!

Due to recent expansion we were practically bursting at the seams in the old office, however, the new place is bright, breezy and spacious – with enough room for a pool table in the breakout area and 3 floors for our developers to frolick within. This building certainly has character with some interesting nooks and crannies to explore, as commented upon by our visitors so far. There’s also a mysterious door in the basement that doesn’t seem to go anywhere…

Makemedia Hack day

Weeks of office banter and competitive tension finally came to a head on Friday for the very first Makemedia Hack Day. This was a chance for everyone in the company to get fired up and create, investigate or nurture any idea they want – and to win a prize for the best project.

And get fired up they did!

The teams and their creations were as follows…

The 3 Marketeers

The 3 Marketeers

The 3 Marketeers

Laura, Sam and Bryony created a multi-faceted marketing campaign surrounding the creation of Makemedia mascot Fanny the Robot! We started up a twitter page which by the end of the day had 30 followers (which is still rising #followfanny !) We also designed a template for a make your own Fanny the robot and a real life sized robot. We brought this all together with a funny viral video.

Tom, Edd and Steve created an iphone app to prevent users from burning their mouths on hot food. Users select the foodstuff they are cooking and how long it cooked for and the app scientifically calculates how long you should leave it till its optimum eating temperature. It was impressive they made this app in just one day- also great for when you’re deep frying tomatoes or flambéing porridge! Team tigerblood were so confident they spent their budget on chef hats and Cava!

Iain, Michailis, Goncalo and Andrew created a very cool website in 3D supported by Unity the 3D engine.

Richard and George created a bird box that employee suggestions are posted into, breaking a laser beam, which then sends an email to relevant in-boxes. Unfortunately due to a technical snag the laser didn’t quite work and was replaced with a doorbell.

And last (and least…team members not effort or creativity!)… Ben

Ben did some R&D investigation into AR technology and was able to get it working on his iphone and laptop. It was really cool but he was marked down on the fact it wasn’t his work from scratch. Interesting though – maybe something we can work on in the future.

And the winner is…

With much hilarious heckling and bravado each team presented their creation the judging panel (Jackie Mission and Robin Scott) declared the winners to be The 3D team…closely followed by The 3 Marketeers. Ben also received comendment in form of a cold beer. Much fun was had by all and Jackie Mission was very impressed with all our efforts and even tweeted about our ‘BRILLIANT TEAM WORK’.

As we got into our oh so flattering overalls it became aparent that some of us had been before….some might say having an unfair advantage!

Makemedia ready to go!

Experienced or not, everyone displayed impressive skills on the track which fortunately was free of banana skins (Mario kart style!). After a fun but tiring 8 heats Robin Scott stole the first prize closely followed by Nick Woods in second and Ed Temple-Smithson in third.

How having an intern helps your business

Hello, my name is Bryony and I’m the newest member of the Makemedia team.

Makemedia's Bryony Seal

Having finished my degree at Brighton Uni in International Events Marketing I, like many graduates, spent most of the summer trawling through websites looking for the perfect job to make my huge debt all worthwhile. I lost count of how many job applications I made and was feeling very disheartened by the lack of response from most of them. I was just about ready to give up hope when I stumbled across an exciting Marketing Assistant Internship (hosted by the Sussex Internship Program) here at Makemedia. From looking over the website I got the feeling it would be a good company to work for.

Why should you take on an intern?

  • Interns provide fresh ideas and enthusiasm!
  • It’s a great, low-risk  way to meet potential employees and see how they would fit into your company
  • Around 70% of interns are recruited after their placement through the Sussex Internship Program – showing how valuable interns are.
  • The Sussex Internship Program will support the graduate financially (low risk to your business) and saves you time by selecting the best candidates for you to consider
  • You will be helping a student gain valuable experience (good karma)

Makemedia previously used the Sussex Internship program to recruit a Junior Developer intern who was permanently recruited becoming a valuable member of the Makemedia team. Similarly, Makemedia have also worked with a postgraduate student on a final project – who is now our Marketing Manager.

How do you get the best out of your intern?

I was attracted to the opportunity to pick up new skills and develop existing ones but at the same time being encouraged to develop my own ideas. I’ve worked with Laura to develop marketing, with the production team to improve processes and have even become a prominent member of an internal team developing the 3D stadium explorer – my favourite project! To me it was clear Makemedia obviously understood the definition of internship was not:

In-tern-ship
-Noun
1. Makes tea & Coffee, and carries out general office housekeeping
2. Completes any boring or unappealing task other staff members cannot be bothered to do!

Although I am happy to make refreshments every now and then, Makemedia provided me valuable support and mentorship to develop my skills and experience, in turn kick starting my career. At a difficult time, internships enable graduates to break the vicious cycle of not being able to get a job without experience but not being able to get the experience without a job.

Advice to graduates

My advice to graduates looking for an internship would be to select your internship carefully – some businesses use internships as cheap labour. The Sussex Internship Program offer a range of internship roles based in companies in the local East Sussex area and research other institutions and the companies themselves for internships they offer.

Sussex Internships are financially supported. For me this was a major plus point – however much you want to further your career paying the bills is always an issue!

I predicted my internship would prove a positive step away from me returning to the depressing prospect of the dole queue…and I was right! Makemedia offered me a part time job starting straight after my internship. I am enjoying working for Makemedia and I really appreciate the chance they gave to me to prove myself.

Makemerry with Makemedia

The Makemedia team started their festive celebrations off with a bang on Thursday night at the lovely Manor restaurant in North Lane. The Makemerry Xmas Soiree was a laid back evening with our clients and friends sharing some mulled cider and festive cheer. The aim of the event was to show off our exciting new projects and cool stuff the team have been working on.  Everyone at Makemedia has been rushed off their feet recently, so it was also a well deserved opportunity to relax and reflect on hard work and successes this year (And tuck into booze and nibbles!).

We were really pleased with the turnout and the atmosphere was buzzing, complimented by the warm aroma of mulled cider. Upstairs we gave our guests a hands on chance to play on the fantastic 3D projects such as Brighton and Hove Albion, Jarrow and ACT-UK .  There was also the opportunity for guests to have a click through some of the websites we created. The feedback from all was positive and we can’t wait to plan our next party!
