Makemedia win Presagis Award for Best Visualization Application!

Makemedia have won the Award for “Best Visualization Application” in the 2012 Presagis Awards for their innovative construction training simulation, produced for the Building Leadership Simulation Centre in Australia.

Find out more about the BLSC project here.

The Master Builder Association of Victoria’s Building Leadership Simulation Centre, aka BLSC (built in conjunction with Schrijver Project Management), was conceived using both digital and real life aspects to create the most realistic and effective database, created using Presagis Creator and Vega Prime.  This means that trainees are immersed in a familiar physical environment, with portacabins, accurate documents, live phone lines, construction equipment and actors, and can also explore realistic 3D simulations of different types of building sites at varying stages of completion.

This training experience is tailored for building site managers from international construction companies. Makemedia provided detailed 3D content and hardware setup for the project.

BLSC General Manager Marc Lyon said,

“The Building Leadership Simulation Centre will revolutionise the way training is delivered across the construction industry. Utilising state-of-the-art simulation technology, the facility will help building companies enhance workplace safety, improve construction quality and reduce project costs.

Makemedia helped turn our vision for this groundbreaking facility into a reality. Their skills and professionalism have helped us reach a quantum leap in training now and for years to come.”

Makemedia Director Nick Wood said, “We are proud to be showcasing UK talent across the world and it is of great satisfaction to myself and the team to be recognized for our innovative simulation projects.”

The Award is given to the client or partner whose application provides a high degree of realism and performance. To be eligible, the application must be deployable as an independent application.  Additional criteria for evaluation include the scope of both the application and its configuration.

UX Camp Brighton 2012: More tickets released soon!

When not working to create great user experiences for our clients, Makemedia’s in-house UX Designer Patrick Sansom also contributes to the UX community by organising UX Camp Brighton. He explains why this is one event you really can’t miss.

For those working in the digital media industry, the value of ensuring a product is useful, usable, intuitable and satisfying for it’s users is a given. However, achieving this is not always easy and can require a wide-range of practical knowledge from many disciplines and expertise of a variety of methods and practices.

UX Camp’s are one of the best ways to gain this understanding. They are all about sharing learnings, tips, tricks and best-practice with your peers in a supportive, collaborative environment. The breadth of subjects covered is amazing, with 50 talks to choose from in one-day! And with most sessions being practically-focussed, there are takeaways that you can use immediately in your work. You don’t need to have a UX or IA in your job title to benefit – if you work in the digital media, you’ll find plenty to apply to your day job.

A session at UX Camp Brighton 2011

The event will be held on Saturday 8th December 2012, from 9.45am to 5pm, at the Cogapp offices (21-33 Dyke Road, Brighton, BN1 3FE).

It is free to attend and the second batch of tickets will be released on the Eventbrite page on Friday 15 November 2012 at 12:30.

More information is available on the UX Camp Brighton website and on the UX Camp Brighton Lanyrd page.

Top 5 Things You Should Be Gaining From Your Work Experience Placement

Find out what Joe Appleton thought of his 2 week work experience placement at Makemedia and his top tips for getting the most out of your own work experience placements.

Joe Appleton

Hi, I’m Joe. I’m currently finishing a two week work experience placement at Makemedia, a full service digital agency located in Brighton. At Makemedia I have been working within the digital marketing department, and would like to share with you why I feel it has been worthwhile and my top 5 tips for what you should be looking to gain from your work experience placements.

1, Develop Skills and Knowledge
I went into my placement with a lack of knowledge in terms of the day to day tasks of a business and many aspects of digital marketing, as I had only studied the subject; focussing on theories, models and definitions. I now feel more confident having completed tasks that were important to the business and learnt from others in the working environment. I have learnt valuable information, new skills and have been guided to relevant articles, blogs and videos to help me understand important aspects of digital marketing.

2, Gain a Further Understanding of a Possible Career
After college I didn’t know where I wanted to start my career so I decided to go to University to study Business Management to further understand a variety of areas within business. During this degree I particularly enjoyed the marketing modules. I knew studying a subject for three years and starting a career in it would put a strain on me financially but my marketing related work experiences have confirmed to me that this is a career choice I want to follow and make a success of.

3, Build up a Better Quality CV
What my CV lacked and what many potential employers require is experience.  By participating in a work experience placement it shows employers a willingness and desire to work.  This also improves the quality of your application for job vacancies as you then have experiences to discuss at interview stage.

4, Build Relationships and New Contacts
Depending on the size of the company you are working for, a work experience placement immediately allows you to meet a variety of new people.  These fresh contacts could lead to more work or a recommendation in the future, as well as a good reference on your CV.

5, Find New Opportunities
A work experience placement opens up a new world of opportunities.  For example, guest authoring a blog for the company website!  To get the most out of a placement the opportunities made available to you should be attempted to the best of your ability – this is a chance to show your capabilities and learn new skills that will be relevant to future employers.

Where to next?

Through my work experience I was able to find a two month internship at another digital agency with the view to full time employment.  The role is ideal and is what I have been searching for over the past few months.

How did my work experience help me to reach employment?

I was able to edit and improve my CV and covering letter with help from the Marketing Manager  at Makemedia who also introduced me to an employee at the organisation I was applying to via LinkedIn. During the interview I was able to discuss in depth what I had learnt during my two weeks at Makemedia and how it was appropriate for the role in hand. Finally, Makemedia gave me a glowing reference which played a huge role in getting me a start in my career within digital marketing.

Thanks Makemedia!

Bond’s Brighton visit causes a splash with synchronised swimmers!

Makemedia and Brighton Synchronised Swimming Team

It's a tough life for our Technical Director James Bond (a.k.a Ben Dykes)

Makemedia are sponsoring the upcoming synchronised swimming show in Brighton Fringe Festival. As it’s James Bond theme (Eau Eau 7, geddit?!) we thought we’d have a fun photoshoot with our own James Bond lookalike Ben Dykes – when he’s not busy being a super spy he’s our Technical Director.

Over 30 swimmers from Brighton Dolphins and Brighton Swimming Club will perform various routines alongside actors from Peacehaven Community School, telling the story of Bond’s mystery visit to Brighton.

Liz Fitzsimons of Brighton Dolpins said, “This is our 4th annual show in the Brighton Fringe Festival. Our secret agent has a new assignment with an Olympic twist. We’ve been learning the routines since January and it’s all coming together nicely. We’re really looking forward to it!”

Ben Dykes explains, “Two of our staff, Bryony and Laura, are taking part in the show and when we heard about the event we wanted to show our support by sponsoring, as well as cheering them on when the day comes. It’s really great to be able to show our support to a local group.”

Tickets for the event are selling well and, as last year’s show “Lights, Water, Action!” was a sell-out event, fans are advised to dive in and get tickets as soon as possible.

The show will take place on Saturday 12th May at 8pm at the Prince Regent Swimming Pool, Jubilee Square, Brighton. Tickets are available at the Brighton Fringe Festival website and Box Office, or Dome Box Office.
