Makemerry with Makemedia

The Makemedia team started their festive celebrations off with a bang on Thursday night at the lovely Manor restaurant in North Lane. The Makemerry Xmas Soiree was a laid back evening with our clients and friends sharing some mulled cider and festive cheer. The aim of the event was to show off our exciting new projects and cool stuff the team have been working on.  Everyone at Makemedia has been rushed off their feet recently, so it was also a well deserved opportunity to relax and reflect on hard work and successes this year (And tuck into booze and nibbles!).

We were really pleased with the turnout and the atmosphere was buzzing, complimented by the warm aroma of mulled cider. Upstairs we gave our guests a hands on chance to play on the fantastic 3D projects such as Brighton and Hove Albion, Jarrow and ACT-UK .  There was also the opportunity for guests to have a click through some of the websites we created. The feedback from all was positive and we can’t wait to plan our next party!

Makemedia are now approved Apple developers!

Makemedia are now approved Apple developers! Technical Director, Ben Dykes, is particularly pleased, saying,

“Mobile technology is a massive growth area, therefore, rapid adoption of mobile media is something a forward thinking company such as Makemedia should be on top of. We are keen to continue adding the latest technology to our portfolio of capabilities.”

The number of smartphone users in Europe is growing by 38% a year. In the UK alone the number of smartphones has jumped by 80% year on year (May 09-May 10). This is providing fantastic opportunities for businesses to market themselves in innovative ways – to anyone, anywhere thanks to pervasive mobile technology.

Makemedia can now submit the apps that we have in the pipeline. Look out for our 3D work becoming available in this format too!

Are you looking for a phone app developer? Makemedia can develop apps for any type of phone, including Android and Windows Phone 7. For enquiries please contact Laura on 0845 017 8777 or levans@makemedia.com.

Makemedia support local Rockinghorse charity

Makemedia sponsor circus-starr

Makemedia support local charity by sponsoring children to attend circus-starr event

Makemedia have sponsored 2 children to go and see the Circus Starr show with local charity Rockinghorse. For 43 years, Rockinghorse have been making life better for sick and disabled babies, children and teenagers in the Sussex and Surrey area by providing specialist equipment and respite areas.  Circus Starr supports local charities to raise their profiles, as well as funding from businesses – having raised £744, 845 last year. In their own words:

“Circus Starr’s unique ethos is to raise thousands of pounds for local charities from the advance sales of tickets to local businesses. These tickets can then be donated to local community groups who otherwise would not get the chance to enjoy the magic of circus.”

Sponsored tickets are donated to local groups including Demelza James House, ABC Fund, Fun in Action For Children, The Bluebird Society For The Disabled and The MIND Shop. The great thing is that as part of their social enterprise commitment,  Circus Starr will be matching Makemedia in sending another 2 children to see the show on our behalf – meaning 4 children will enjoy the show thanks to our donation!

Makemedia MD George Longfoot said,

“Even though general market conditions have been difficult and companies are watching their spend it’s important not to forget to support charities. Supporting the local economy and community is something which is really important to Makemedia and having a young child myself I can see the importance of sponsoring a charity which helps children.”

If you are interested in getting involved get in touch with Circus Star or call them on 01260 288 690.

It’s all gone 3D at the Lighthouse

Makemedia's 3D guys break out the specs appeal

Makemedia's 3D guys break out the specs appeal

For me, Mon 11th October 2010 heralded a mini conference on 3D run by BTV Post and Lighthouse, in partnership with Decode Broadcast Hire. With great excitement I picked up my ticket from the office, put on my best trainspotting Parker and in the name of multi dimensional exploration I went to see what it is that makes the magic! I knew I was going to be in for a treat after all it’s 3D right!

Well I wasn’t disappointed, this time it was ‘Stereoscopic 3D’ as opposed to the 3D for which Makemedia are rapidly making ourselves a name. Long gone are those days buried deep in the collective conscious of red and green lenses sat in an ungainly white card frame. Now it’s all about High Technology with major name players taking 3D and running wild with it. I learnt there are three competing forms of glasses (including a pair with electronic shutters), that light travels in circles, that 3D was very popular with the Third Reich (or is that the 3D Reich) and that because it’s all in your mind it can really hurt!!!

Yes Stereoscopic 3D is as old as photography and has been very popular in the past, but these waves came and went and now on the lessons they generated, we’re in the 3rd age. This time it’s definitely here to stay and this is so widely accepted that glasses manufacturers are even working on prescription 3D glasses to allow a wider audience the joy of the super real.

Obviously as mentioned we here at Makemedia have been making 3D for some time now, but with polygons not lenses, a distinction that has not gone unnoticed in the world of stereoscopy and they are very keen that a distinction of terms is adhered to. Theirs and our world are by no means mutually exclusive though, in fact, on the contrary with the likes of Pixar leading the charge and James Cameron with Avatar it would seem our disciplines are very much entwined.

A world of CGI and 3D is ahead of us, we are on the cusp and cutting edge once again! Many paths will be dead ends, many will fall by the wayside, but the incredible pearl in this oyster really is ours, and any dragon guarding it will come right out of your screen and singe your fingers if you don’t keep ahead of your game!

Who’s been visiting Makemedia today?

We felt rather glam today at Makemedia as we were having a photoshoot with Brighton and Hove Chamber of Commerce President Julia Chanteray and Councillor Ayas Fallon-Khan, Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Employment and Major Projects. They were here to promote the Ride the Wave initiative which sees the Council and BHCC working together to offer free events to local businesses where they can get targetted business support from industry leading experts.

You can see George our MD showing our guests around the office in the photos below:

Makemedia improvement day

Last week the whole Makemedia office upped sticks and spent a day out brainstorming ways to improve the business at the lovely Eagle pub. We identified problems and issues and then collectively suggested solutions which will make a real difference. This was a very interesting experience, great for team bonding and definitely recommended to other businesses out there as a way of being aware of what’s going on throughout the company and as a really great problem solving exercise – after all twelve heads are better than one!

We finished the day with a pub quiz, being in the right environment for that sort of thing, and guess who won?

Robin speaks at Brighton & Hove Chamber of Commerce

It was an early morning today for Robin, our Commercial Director,  as he was speaking at the Brighton and Hove Chamber Breakfast. He answered a few questions from the Chamber including..

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome so far since starting Makemedia?

Building up knowledge gaps and learning to listen. We’ve had some great mentoring at Makemedia from people like Simon Conroy at Madgex, Mark Riminton at Shirlaws and Tim and Jacky Misson of Rise which has really helped.

How closely do you watch how you’re doing financially?

Very closely. Being aware of cashflow down to the very penny has helped us know where we are going and to run the business well. It also means that you are less stressed as you know exaclty what is happening in your business.

When are you happiest?

When I’m proud of our output, this is very important to me.

What’s been the biggest benefit of joining the Chamber for you?

Meeting Laura our Marketing and Business Development Manager*, gaining experience through working on Chamber groups and having a presence in the local business community.

*not at all influenced by my presence in the room I’m sure!

So here’s a great big “THANK YOU!” to the BHCC and everyone who attended today.

And here he is in action!

Latest Presagis promotion of our innovative 3D work with Act-UK

Wow! Presagis have made this rather spiffing video of the Brindley Place building site we created for our ACT-UK project. The finshed project recreated two seperate building sites, each one at 5 different moments in time. Over 50,000 photos were taken for the project and we built 500 3D models.

The finished virtual environment is projected onto a massive screen – 12 metres wide and 3 metres high – that curves 180 degrees around the viewer to create a realistic and immersive environment for training site managers in. It’s all very realistic for the trainee… ACT-UK even have proper portacabins with live phone systems and actors to realistically recreate the stresses and strains that might be faced on the job. The trainees are given a scenario where something goes wrong and they can then go “on site” in the virtual site to look for health and safety issues and the like. Their efforts are recorded and scored using a scoring system also created by Makemedia.

At the end of last year Makemedia won the the Presagis ‘Best Visualisation Application’ at the worlds largest simulation, training and education conference – I/ITSEC, in Orlando Florida for this very project.

I’ve posted a video below showing our Account Director Nick Wood testing the project on the big screens. The site you see there is the Alderman Green building site, the other of the two sites we recreated for this project.

We’d love to hear feedback from anyone in the building, training or 3D visualisation industry – what do you think of the project?
