Simon Collins - Developer
“Hi I'm Simon, Developer at Makemedia. With around 10 years experience, my role involves utilising my huge arsenal of skills to build amazing, functional, useable websites and applications.”
Where did you come from?
I am from a galaxy far far away. On a more sensible note, I grew up in Cambridge but have lived in Brighton for almost 16 years. I went to Brighton University, hence moving down here, and like a lot of people, I never left. Brighton has a habit of getting hold of people as it's such a great place to live and work. There are few cities in the UK where you can see such a mix of people...I love it!
What can you do?
I started working in the Internet arena around 2001 when web design, functionality and usability were not the closest of friends. A time when Netscape Navigator and IE 5 were the norm and all websites used tables and shim gifs. Thankfully the web is a far better place today and over the years I have gained a lot of experience working in a huge variety of industry sectors for both media agencies and software houses alike, embracing new technologies along the way. My core skills lie predominantly on back-end development and architecture using C# and .NET but over the past few years I have also gained a huge array of front-end ninja skills using CSS and JavaScript/jQuery.
What do you do?
My role at Makemedia is pretty varied and involves developing solutions for a wide array of clients, seeing projects through every step of their life cycle. I work predominantly on the back-end code but also provide assistance on front-end dev where possible.
The core skills I'm using at the moment are ASP.NET, MVC, NHibernate, C#, SQL, HTML5, JavaScript and jQuery and we are becoming more and more agile in our approach to everything we do which is an added bonus.
What do you like?
Aside from keeping up with latest advances in web technology I'm a huge music fan. I am somewhat of a nerdy vinyl collector (you know, those plastic things with grooves you have to play on a turntable) and have been djing in around Brighton for 10 years. I also run a monthly radio show on Brighton's very own community radio station Radio Reverb.
I love the great outdoors, recently became a dad, have a huge crazy Labrador, love mountain biking and kiting.
